Unitron is a subtheme of the LEGO Space theme released in the years 1994 and 1995.
Description
Unitron is one of the heroic Space factions, opposing the villainous Spyrius. Unitron also features elements from the classic Futuron line, as it revolves around a large monorail system powered by a 9V battery; it retains LEGO interchangeability in the form of small, sleek cockpits which can dock on the front or top of its vehicles.
Unitron's main color palette is grey, black, and bright blue with transparent blue and transparent fluorescent green. Dark grey quietly made an appearance as a new LEGO Space colour in Unitron minifigure torsos. Aside from the rocks they built their bases on, the colour appears in no other parts in this theme.
This subtheme is significantly smaller than its contemporaries, with only three sets officially released under the Unitron name. However, the monorail system set 6991 Monorail Transport Base is commonly regarded as the first Unitron set, although it is the only one released in 1994, available worldwide, and lacks the Unitron branding in international catalogs or its box art. All three Unitron-branded sets were released in 1995 and were exclusive to the North American market, which retroactively applied the Unitron label to 6991 and grouped it together with the other three sets in mini catalogs.[1] The two Unitron vehicles are 1787 Crater Cruiser and their largest starcraft 1789 Star Hawk II (both 1995) (which was only half the size for most of the other Space subthemes' largest starships). The base is 1793 Space Station Zenon (1995).
The Space set 6705 Space Explorers, which featured a single Unitron Chief minifigure, was also released worldwide in 1994. Additionally, 1785 Crater Critters lacks Unitron iconography but is advertised alongside Unitron sets in LEGO Mania Magazine, has a similar set number, is also North American exclusive, and has one robocritter with the Unitron color palette.
Background
Unitron is located at the "crossroads of the universe" where Ice Planet 2002, Space Police, and Spyrius converge.
In Europe, catalogue pictures portray Unitron as civilians being attacked by Spyrius to steal their technology. They also face a Spyrius assault during TV commercials.[2] According to LEGO Mania Magazine, Unitron is an organization likened to NASA, CIA, and FBI that conducts top secret interstellar missions to fight back against the Spyrius spies, with Space Station Zenon acting as their training and command center. Other product descriptions in Shop At Home emphasize Unitron's role in exploration of the cosmos.
In The Adventures of the LEGO Maniac, Jailbreak Joe lands on planet Unitron and hijacks the Crater Cruiser in an effort to travel to Spyrius. The LEGO Maniac helps an Unitron Astronaut named Ed recapture Jailbreak Joe by chasing him in the Star Hawk II and then switching the monorail tracks.
